Rats and mice are regarded
as pests because of the spread of disease, contamination of
food, physical damage and general unsightlyness.
These small mammals are excellent
suvivors and have very keen senses (except for eyesight -
which is poor). They are agile, omnivourous scavengers and
are mostly nocturnal. Rodents are excellent swimmers and
climbers, many house exteriors are rough enough for them to
scale.
The three rodents we mainly
encounter in Auckland are the House mouse, the Norway
rat and the Roof rat. (The native rat is not often sighted).
As well as being unsightly, rodents must
constantly gnaw to grind down their teeth. This can cause
expensive damage to internal wiring, plumbing and other
internal structures.
