       Ant control - Auckland

There are over 3000 species of ant. In Auckland, the main problem species are the Black ant, Argentine ant and the Pharoah's ant.

Ants are social insects and are extremely successful and well organised. Colonies consist of  males, females and sterlile females. The male exists purely to mate with the female and is then redundant. The female is the queen and creates the sterile females. The sterile females then carry out all tasks of the colony from defence of the nest to caring for young. (The ants you see on the kitchen bench - all sterile females).

Ants follow trails to there destinations. These are marked out by scents or pheromones. They are in constant communication with each other and are very efficient at locating and comunicating a food source back to the nest (spilt jam on the bench).  Ants are tireless workers and may have travelled some distance to get to the area they causing a problem.
