Carpet Beetle - information, control
|
| |
Carpet beetle are
known for causing damage to materials that originate from
animals e.g. wool carpet. The female lays eggs in areas that
are dark and sheltered for the larvae to grow. It is the
larvae that cause the damage to carpets etc. They feed for
up nine months. They pupate and then the adult will live for
up to 40 days to reproduce. The carpet beetle is not
restricted to carpet and may be found feeding on: fur, hair,
silk, clothes, fabrics, underfelts and even stored foods. A
common question with Carpet beetle is how do they spread.
They have wings - they can fly. They may also hitch a
ride on a food source (bringing home a rug). Adults may
hitch a ride in on freshly cut flowers as they are nectar
feeders. |

Inspection is
important when treating carpet beetle. The carpet
beetle may be infesting something outside of the
carpet (e.g. clothes). Treating the carpet may still
lead to reinfestation if the sources of the carpet
beetle are missed.
